Meth lab discovered in south Bibb

Bibb County deputies found a methamphetamine lab Friday morning in an abandoned house off Ga. 247.

Deputies closed Griffin Road at the intersection of Hawkinsville Road as the Macon-Bibb County Fire Hazardous Materials unit and an investigator in a white hazmat suit looked over the the property on the corner of the busy highway connecting Macon and Warner Robins.

“Basically it’s the end results of a lab that’s finished at this point,” said Lt. Chris Patterson of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. “We’ve got some chemicals and some other things that need to be cleaned up and taken away for safety reasons.”

The patrol unit got a tip that led them to the old house at about 11:30 a.m.

Deputies called in the Macon-Bibb Fire Department’s HAZ-MAT unit to help secure the scene and hose down the initial investigator who wore a mask and was dressed in a white jumpsuit.

An ambulance crew examined that investigator to make sure he didn’t suffer any adverse affects from the harmful chemicals.

Patterson said it appears the lab could have been working a few days ago but that an exact time frame is difficult to pinpoint.

A specialized methamphetamine lab cleanup crew came from Atlanta to finish clearing away the chemicals, Patterson said.

They have no suspects at this time but anyone with information is urged to call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office or Macon Regional CrimeStoppers at (877) 68CRIME.
